Activity Synopsis (ID# 25464) (Hide Synopsis)

Objective(s) The objectives of the seminar were to:
-provide information on the principles embodied in the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (ECRML), especially those related to education
-present models, standards and practices in minority languages education
-provide theoretical and practical information on promoting Romani in education
-discuss how the above mentioned principles, standards and models could be reflected in the school curriculum.
Output/Results The seminar provided information related to minority language education, both on theoretical and practical levels, discussing, inter alia, the various models used for minority language education, e.g bilingual pre-school education, immersion, trilingual education, language nests, the ways to promote Romani in education and to develop teaching materials for Romani, as well as the role of minority languages and the need to promote respect and understanding between all speakers. 
Conclusions/Follow Up The participants appreciated the discussions, especially the practical approach to minority language education. The main issues raised referred to the drafting of special curricula and programmes, the training of teachers and the relation between minority languages and these and majority languages.
