Activity Synopsis (ID# 30826) (Hide Synopsis)

Objective(s) The aim of the RAE component of the IBP project is to prepare teachers and mediators to work in multicultural environment.
The objectives of the second training session were to:
monitor the activities implemented based on the skills and knowledge acquired in the first training session;
enhance school-community and teachers-parents cooperation;
increase awareness and understanding of RAE issues, including history and culture;
develop skills to address sensitive issues in the classroom and to create a positive environment for affirmation of identity and cultural belonging;
develop teachers-mediators cooperation in order to improve education of RAE children and to develop effective cooperation with parents.
 
Output/Results The participants were mainly the same ones as in the first meeting, with a few exceptions.
The training programme has been structured based on the training manual prepared by Calin Rus with several modules based on the new curriculum produced by the CoE in the framework of the ROMED – European Training Programme for Roma Mediators, using the adaptations based on the experience of the first training session, taking into account the two target groups: teachers working with Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian children and mediators.
The training included an opening session – attended by Enesa Kadic, from the Ministry of Education, plenary sessions, workshops on the topics corresponding to the objectives stated above, some with both teachers and mediators, others separately for teachers and mediators, and was concluded with an evaluation.
A variety of methods was used: plenary lectures with visual support in local languages, group work, interactive exercises, role plays and group discussions.
The program of this session has been planned with the aim to provide enough elements so that participants will improve and extend the skills acquired in the first session to design and implement in their practice activities connected with all the objectives set for the training and to support the development of school-community and school-parents relationships. Thus, an important part of the first day was dedicated to a review of the activities implemented by participants in their schools. The participants appreciated the possibility to present their activities and learn from one another. It offered both opportunities to receive feedback from trainers, and the possibility to share experiences among colleagues.

A session on European experiences related to Roma education encouraged participants to reflect on the way in which these experiences can be relevant for their local context and to connect them with the provisions of the Kosovo RAE Education Strategy. The aim was to be able to situate their work in the framework of existing policies and of European practice.

Another session was addressing some of the most important traps to avoid in practice. This session started from the presumption that even if we have good intentions, sometimes they do not work well unless we take into account certain aspects, in order to avoid being misled.

The sessions on identity building and history comprised a part on Roma history, focused on the Ottoman period, with reference to the Fact Sheets on the History of Roma, published by the CoE in the framework of the project Education for Roma Children in Europe, that were distributed to all participants. Another part was focused on the historical, archeological and other sources for the history and culture of Egyptians and Ashkali.

Lectures were given by Rubin Zemon and Saimir Mile on the topics stated above and a session on identity and culture in educational activities and in the work of mediators was organised by the trainers.

Another focus of the second day was on dealing with sensitive issues in the relations of teachers and mediators with children and with parents, as well as on the way school can develop appropriate public communication practices in order to build a positive cooperation with the local community, based on trust and mutual respect.

After all the training sessions programmed, the movie ''Whose those song'' by Adela Peeva was projected and it was followed by open discussion.

Because of the significant differences among the participants in terms of needs and work context, most of the morning of the last day was organised based on a flexible approach, inspired by the method called Open Space Technology, the trainers being thus able to provide additional support and input based on specific demands of participants. Thus, in the first part of the morning participants worked in small mixed groups to discuss the challenges they encountered in implementing the activities for the integration of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian children and to come up with creative solutions.
Participants were motivated and active, interested to provide valuable inputs to the discussion and outcomes of the group activities. In the second part of the morning participants were given the opportunity to choose between two topics of interest:

1.more in-depth learning about the history of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities – a discussion led by Saimir Mile and Rubin Zemon, devoted to the access of relevant historical data, that may be presented to the pupils, how to approach to the small pupils to understand the ethnic diversity in mixed classes. A need of dissemination of official booklets for history of Roma, Egyptians and Ashkali, approved by the Ministry of education was identified and raised.

2.restaurative approach in solving conflicts – interactive training session on restaurative justice as a new method of dealing with conflicts, by focusing on the way in which violent behaviour affects the relationship between people within a community.

The final sessions focused on how the participants will strengthen the collaboration teacher-mediator-community centre, as well as the collaboration between the teachers for creating transversal educational activities.
The participants were given the task to continue to implement the activities, the changes in their practice that they started after the first session and to focus more on teachers-parents and school-community relationships, by organising meeting and events aiming at strengthening these relationships.
The evaluation was very positive. The participants appreciated the trainers’ inputs and interactivity, as well as the possibility to share experiences among themselves.
 
Conclusions/Follow Up The training proved that the approach taken, based on a series of training sessions and practical work done by participants in between trainings, was a good choice. An important improvement was noticed both regarding the involvement of participants as well as their attitudes towards the process of applying in school the approaches learned throughout the session. Several possibilities for exchanges of good practices and discussing the common challenges and doubts were offered, supporting teachers to gain confidence using the approaches and to stimulate each other. Most of the participants implemented high quality activities, proving that the content of the first training was relevant for their work. The possibility of having a third session in this training is very positive, giving not only the possibility to address more in-depth issues, but also stimulating the participants to be active in their schools in between the sessions.
