Activity Synopsis (ID# 31465) (Hide Synopsis)

Objective(s) The new Division for Combating Torture, established within the GPO, is supported to perform efficiently investigation in cases related to torture and ill-treatment.

Output/Results The new Division was provided with office equipment corresponding to the unit's needs, identified in accordance with an official request by the Prosecutor General.

Refurbishment of the premises of the central apparatus of the Division for Combating Torture and provision of equipment were carried out at the beginning of 2011.
Conclusions/Follow Up On the occasion of the refurbishment of the Division for Combating Torture at the General Prosecutor’s Office, an inauguration ceremony took place on 29 July 2011.

Mr. Valeriu Zubco, General Prosecutor, Mr. Dirk Lorenz, Political Officer of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldova and Mr. Ulvi Akhundlu, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau participated at the ceremony of inauguration. The General Prosecutor emphasized that the activity of this Division was one of the main priorities of the General Prosecutor’s Office. “The torture phenomenon has been for a long time the General Prosecutor’s Office target point but the necessity to establish a Division specialised in conducting investigations of ill-treatment appeared as a result of the events from 7 April 2009. In this respect, the support and assistance provided by the Democracy Support Programme has been very valuable to the General Prosecutor’s Office”.
Participants All prosecutors employed by the Division for Combating Torture benefited from the refurbishment and provision of equipment.
