Activity Synopsis (ID# 32951) (Hide Synopsis)

Objective(s) 1. The objective of the Press Conference was to launch the Project in Armenia and inform the interested parties and public at large about the Project goals and activities.
2. The goal of the seminar “Balancing responsible journalism and freedom of expression” was to initiative a debate on the need for ethical journalism and stronger protection of the fundamental human right to freedom of expression in an Armenian reality shaped after the decriminalization of defamation and insult. Representatives of the media, lawyers, judges, non-governmental organizations as well as a number of prominent international organizations and experts discussed the need and the ways to strengthen ethical journalism and protect the freedom of speech.
Output/Results 1. The Press Conference got a high coverage in the Armenian Press, thus increasing the visibility of the project.

2. Seminar proved very efficient. During the 1st day of the Seminar the Armenian legislative framework on defamation and insult as well as the challenges and advantages of the post-decriminalization period were discussed. Problems of the Protection of the Rights to Freedom of Expression before Domestic Courts in Defamation/Insult Cases and Insights into the Jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights were addressed.
