Show Synopsis
Title 2nd European Congress on Global Education: Education, Interdependence and Solidarity in a Changing World
Description The preparation of the 2nd Global Education Congress: Education, Interdependence and Solidarity in a Changing World started in December 2011 with the constitution of a core working group composed by NSC partners, which elaborated the concept paper, the programme outline and proposed draft strategic recommendations and declaration. This process was extended to an enlarged consultative group which provided a feedback on the draft strategic recommendations. An expert, selected upon a call for expert launched in late 2011, monitored the consultation process. This consultation process was complemented with a meeting of the core working group in May 2012 in Strasbourg. The Portuguese NGDO Platform, Plataforma, was contracted as the implementing partner for the organisation of the Congress.

The Congress was initially foreseen for 2011, but with the extension of the JMA for 2012, it was postponed to May/June 2012 and later set to 27-28 September for an optimal result of the consultative process engaged with partners for the preparation of the event and the drafting of its preliminary strategic recommendations.

The NSC created a special website for the Congress to facilitate the sharing of information with a wider audience and to offer a restricted working forum to assist the consultation process between the NSC secretariat and members of the core working group.

The 2nd Global Education Congress: Education, Interdependence and Solidarity in a Changing World took place on 27-28 September at the University of Lisbon. It was organised by the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe in partnership with Global Education Network Europe (GENE) and CONCORD Europe, in co-operation with IPAD-Camões, the Portuguese NDGO Platform and the University of Lisbon.

The following identified themes guided the Congress single and multi-stakeholders working sessions: 1) National strategy development and implementation; 2) Curricular reform and education at the national and local levels; 3) Competence development of educators; 4) Quality support and monitoring; 5) Campaigning and outreach, while the Congress objectives were twofold:
- assessing the development and progress of global education over the past ten years, since the adoption of the Maastricht Declaration (2002 - 2012);
- guarantee commitment to the necessary support for and further strengthening and development of global education until 2015 and beyond.
